The Eureka Community Comes Together to Help a Neighbor

The Eureka Community Comes Together to Help a Neighbor
Judee Craig, grateful after a long day’s work

The Eureka Lions Club and others from Eureka came together on Saturday, Oct. 10, to help Judee Craig, who lives off grid along Cedar Creek in Antelope Valley.

It all began this summer when Abby Sweet, art teacher and president of the Eureka Lions Club, brought the project to the club. Abby’s friend, Judee Craig, had about twenty 12-foot ponderosa pine logs that needed to be cut to length, split, and stacked at Judee’s residence to provide heat for the winter. To make the project more difficult, the logs were about 150 yards from the house. The club needed chainsaws and equipment to cut, split, and move the wood and people to do all of it. It was obvious the club did not have enough people to complete the project. The project was loosely organized and an October day was set.

The chainsaws roared, cut lengths were loaded onto pickups and hauled to the splitting area, as a tractor with forks moved uncut logs up to the work area. Two wood splitters were splitting logs and wood was being stacked. As volunteer projects go, things worked out great. No one got hurt and six to seven cords of wood were cut, split, and stacked. Judee was very thankful and said she has enough wood for two or three years.

The Eureka Lions Club members included: Abby Sweet, Diane and Mike Podborny, Fiona and Andy Goettle, Gina DeValera, and Fabrizio Cartageua. Other Eureka volunteers included Danny Brown, Shauna Brown, Trypp Brown, Elden Allred, Josie Hoekenga, Monte and Heather Hudson, Campbell Goettle, Audrey Goettle, and Christopher Hudson. Nancy and John Larimer from the Hot Springs Ranch also worked and Nancy provided dinner for everyone. A special thanks to Monte Hudson for bringing his tractor and operating it all day, as well as Bill Hicks for lending us his wood splitter.
