The VFW’s 2nd Annual Car Show was held September 25–26, bringing two days of activity to downtown Eureka. This year’s schedule included a burnout contest, a dance, and of course, the car show itself.
Crissy Hubbard, a VFW member, has coordinated the event for the past two years. When she first moved to Eureka, she remembers the car show being one of the community’s biggest annual events. At that time, Sheriff Ken Jones organized the show, and it was truly something spectacular. After Ken stepped back, participation gradually declined, and for several years the event didn’t happen at all. Although there were attempts to revive it over time, it never regained the momentum it once had.
The Eureka VFW has been working to raise funds for improvements at Veteran’s Park, including a new meeting building and general beautification. With the park located right in the heart of Main Street, it’s an ideal setting for a community event like this.
Elko caterers; Collins Low N Slow BBQ set up their smoker and served food throughout the weekend at various locations, and Cooks Steakhouse provided bar service as well. On Friday, attendees headed to Eagle Street in Diamond Valley for the burnout contest. That evening, Ventura Highway, an America tribute band, performed at the Eureka County Fairgrounds. Mild weather, a stunning sunset, and plenty of good food and drinks made the night feel absolutely perfect.
Saturday morning began with Main Street lined with classic cars and trucks, rat rods, and several rare and distinctive vehicles.
This year’s show was a great success. Participants browsed vendor booths, enjoyed good food and drinks, and entered to win raffle prizes. While some critics may point out that attendance was modest, the event still drew 40 car entries and seven burnout contestants. A few longtime participants expressed interest in bringing back drag races, but insurance constraints prevented that activity. And as always, late-summer scheduling means competing events across the state, which naturally affects turnout.
As this year’s organizer, Crissy extends her heartfelt thanks to everyone who helped make the event possible. It takes significant planning and coordination to bring a two-day event together. The Eureka County Commissioners and county employees offered support in many ways, including Facilities and Events Manager Brenna Rogne, who secured Ventura Highway for Friday night’s performance. That addition allowed the car show to expand into a two-day event, something that greatly benefits the local economy. Sponsors, participants, and community members all played a vital role in making this year’s show a success.
