Will Daylight Savings Time Finally Die This Year?!

Will Daylight Savings Time Finally Die This Year?!

Earlier this summer there were news outlets screaming that daylight savings time was coming to an end. It was like the Little Red Hen running around the barnyard yelling, “The sky is falling! The sky is falling.” And it was just raining. That same thing happened with the announcement of the end of daylight savings time. It is not ending… Well not yet anyway. What had happened to start the barrage of news? On the federal level the U.S. Congress House of Representatives had passed a bill on July 14 to end the event. BUT! The next step to make it a law of the land, a bill needed to be passed by the U.S. Senate. That did not and has not happened. That means, so far, the country will set clocks back come November 1, 2026. Except for the states that do not fall under the daylight-savings time parameters. The bill is known as The Sunshine Act of 2025 and was introduced by Rep. Vern Buchanan R-Florida. The House passed the bill 308-117.

Trying to figure out just exactly where the bill stands is like trying to fold a fitted bed sheet! A king-sized fitted bed sheet at that! There are layers and corners that are everywhere. News outlets are saying the bill will die again this year in the Senate. Opponents to the bill state their reasons are that it would have terrible negative medical effects. While proponents say ending the spring forward hour would be beneficial medically.

President Trump has stated he is in favor of doing away with daylight savings time. His reasoning covers the benefits of convenience and cost by stopping the disruption of schedules; public safety would benefit as earlier sunsets has been seen an increase in robbery, murder and car accidents; health and well-being as the risk of cardiac issues, strokes and seasonal depression occur more often during time changes. He also supports the fact that longer, not shorter evening daylight encourages outdoor activities later into the year which increases business for early night time industries.

It is clear, well clear as mud, that the hold up this time is clearly in the Senate. A vote has not been called for and is not planned. Nor is the bill set to be discussed at this time. Of course then there is the issue of the State chiming in on the possibility of dissolving this practice. Over and over and over again a bill has been brought up in the Nevada State Legislature. Each and every time it has been shot down with varying reasons. Our law makers meet again in February 2027. If this issue is important to you, take the time to write, call, email your representative and tell them your take on yea or nay to keeping or doing away with daylight savings time.
